Clear, honest information about session fees, why we're an out-of-network practice, and how your out-of-network benefits and superbills can help offset the cost of care.
Brave Beginnings Counseling is a private-pay practice, which means Robert is not paneled or contracted with any insurance networks. This isn't a limitation — it's a deliberate choice that keeps the focus exactly where it belongs: on your healing, your goals, and your pace.
When an insurance company is part of the equation, it often decides how many sessions you're allowed, what "qualifies" as a valid reason for treatment, and which private details are filed into your permanent record. Stepping outside that system lets Robert provide specialized, focused care — in areas like betrayal trauma, sexual and behavioral addictions, and PTSD — without a third party shaping the work.
If your plan includes out-of-network benefits, you may still be reimbursed for a portion of what you invest. We're glad to provide the paperwork you need to pursue it.
Start the ConversationA superbill is a detailed, itemized receipt for the therapy you've already paid for — prepared specifically so your insurance company can review it for out-of-network reimbursement. It includes everything an insurer asks for: dates of service, service (CPT) codes, Robert's credentials and NPI, the practice's details, and a corresponding diagnosis code.
Each month, upon request, we'll prepare a superbill which will be available in your client portal. You submit it to your insurer, and if your plan offers out-of-network coverage, they may send reimbursement directly to you for a portion of what you paid.
Because insurers require it, a superbill must include a formal mental health diagnosis. If you'd prefer to keep treatment entirely off your medical record, you can simply choose not to submit one.
Four straightforward steps take you from session to reimbursement.
Payment is collected at the time of each session, just like any private-pay appointment.
Once a month, ask us for an itemized superbill. We'll prepare it with every code and detail your insurer needs.
Submit the superbill to your insurance company through their out-of-network claims process — usually an online portal, app, or mailed form.
If your plan covers out-of-network care, your insurer reimburses you directly for the eligible portion of your fees.
Reimbursement is never guaranteed — benefits, deductibles, allowed amounts, and filing rules vary from one plan to the next. Checking your specific coverage ahead of time is always the best place to start.
A few minutes on the phone with your insurance company will tell you exactly what to expect. Ask:

Without claims passing through an insurer, your records and the details of your work stay strictly between you and Robert.
The depth, frequency, and direction of your therapy are guided by your needs and progress — never by a claims department's rulebook.
When you don't file through insurance, there's no obligation to carry a formal diagnosis on your permanent medical record.
You choose your counselor based on specialty, experience, and genuine fit — not a limited panel of assigned providers.
Clients who invest directly in their care often arrive more engaged, which tends to make the work more focused and effective.
Sessions, intensives, and scheduling can be shaped around your life rather than squeezed into coverage limits.
We believe in full transparency — you'll always know the cost before you commit.
Fees vary by service, as individual counseling, couples therapy, and intensives each call for different amounts of time and preparation. Exact rates are shared with you up front — before your first session — with no hidden costs and no surprises. Payment is collected at the time of service.
Under the federal No Surprises Act, anyone who is uninsured or paying out-of-pocket has the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of the expected cost of services. We're happy to provide one in writing upon request — just ask.
